Swedish Kalops
This is super simple winter comfort food. Go protein go. (Apparently this also works well with reindeer meat.)
Big Slow Cooker Pot (I use my iron dutch oven)
Flour Now of Cornstarch Later
Lump of Butter
Stew Beef
Big Onion, or a few smaller onions
Allspice Berries (ground works too)
Bay Leaves
Ground Black Pepper
Water
Salt
(Potatoes or Egg Noodles or whatever)
Melt a blop of butter in the bottom of your big pot
Dredge the stew beef in flour, or not
Brown the beef on the bottom of the pan
Cut the onion into wedges and throw it in
Add bay and allspice, I am liberal in this. Go more lightly on the pepper.
Pour water over everything, more or less to cover.
Let simmer on low, covered, for about an hour and a half.
Salt to taste at the end. If you have not used flour, thicken with cornstarch.
If you want to use potatoes, you can put them in at the 1 hour mark and cook them for a half hour.
I've left out all proportions because it is all to taste, and with stew beef you get what you get.
Goes well with beets or cabbage.
